kickstART: the big project

Field of Play: Active Landscape forms part of Cambridge KickstART, a programme of public art projects celebrating the creation of over 100 new homes at Mitchams Park, the former site of Cambridge City Football Club. Supported by award-winning house builders Crest Nicholson Plc, kickstART incorporates a variety of cross art-form collaborations at the centre of this new community.

Where it stARTed

Cambridge KickstART began with two projects to mark the beginning of a new era for Cambridge City Football Club. Service | Movement | Desire, a short film about the Club and Making the Move, street projected animations from the Light Rider.

Active Landscape follows on from these original projects, alongside two other works: End of the Game, a sound project created by award winning partnership Liminal and Spirit of Song, a community choir project by musicians and composers Kathryn and Jason Rowland.

Field of Play: End of the Game

Liminal’s End of the Game remembers the lost ‘soundmark’ of the football crowd at Cambridge City’s Milton Road ground. This lost soundmark signified the coming together of the wider community, whether they watched the game or only heard it from a distance. At 3pm every Saturday, on ‘the whistle,’ play began. Now only those who lived around the Milton Road ground when Cambridge City played, remember the sound.

A brass whistle encased in a box is hung in each new home built on the site of the old football ground. The whistle remains silent except for once, annually, when it may be blown at 3pm for a 90-minute period, on the Saturday closest to the date of the last Cambridge City game, held at the Milton Road football ground.

Spirit of Song: The Man with the Whistle

Musician and composers’ Kathryn and Jason Rowland has worked with the new residents of Mitcham Park and the surrounding communities, to compose and record a new anthem for Mitcham Park.  The anthem uses images and memories of the area and looks to hopes and desires for the future.  The song was written by the local community and performed at the inaugural Field of Play event in 21016.
